CHOLERA DIARY has won the Gracie Allen Award presented by the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television. Judges called the documentary "superior" and said that it "effectively portrays the changing roles and concerns of women." The award was presented at the 25th Annual Gracie Allen Awards Gala at the Hudson Theatre on Broadway, in New York City April 17, 2000. They are the "smoke jumpers" among international aid organisations. While others are often stymied or delayed by bureaucratic red tape, the men and women of Doctors Without Borders /Medecins Sans Frontieres move in. They provide food and clean water, dig latrines, set up first-aid stations and field hospitals, and treat all-comers according to need. Often they are the last to remain in situations abandoned by others as too dangerous. |
